EXPAT TAX

Whether you're an expatriate seeking guidance on filing your taxes, ceasing tax residency in South Africa, or a company with international employees, our range of specialized services is designed to meet your unique needs.

Are you a
Tax Resident?

tax resident is someone who pays tax in South Africa on their worldwide income & capital gains.

A tax non-resident only pays tax in South Africa on local-sourced amounts.

Becoming a non-resident (i.e., tax emigration) is not automatic. A Notice of Non-Resident Tax Status needs to be issued by SARS to confirm your status. Don't worry though - we're here to guide you.

Double Tax Treaty Relief

We know expat tax. Let us show you how well.

01

Temporary Tax Non-Residency

If you are a tax resident in another country that has a double tax treaty with South Africa, you may temporarily cease tax residency in South Africa. This is great for those who earn well above R1.25 million per year (or who are not employees) and may end up returning to South Africa in future.

03

Reduced Withholding Tax Rates

For certain types of income, such as dividends or interest from sources in South Africa, you can claim reduced withholding tax rates under a double tax treaty - sometimes down to Nil. We can set this up for you and handle the SARS reporting requirements as well.

02

Special Tax Treaty Exemptions

Certain taxpayers in specific countries, like pilots in the UAE, can claim special exemptions in respect of their income from employment. If you work abroad, we can help by determining whether you are eligible to claim any special exemption. If you are, we can take it forward with SARS on your behalf.

04

Advanced Tax Planning

We're constantly looking ahead for our clients. Let us help you plan your next steps for the future, taking advantage of available relief measures to ensure the preservation of your wealth, while remaining compliant from a tax and exchange control perspective.

OTHER EXPAT TAX SERVICES

Approval for International Transfer

Tax residents may send up to R1 million out of South Africa per calendar year. However, tax non-residents must obtain an Approval International Transfer (AIT) Tax Compliance Status PIN from SARS for amounts they wish to transfer abroad.

Let us know if you assistance with obtaining an AIT PIN from SARS.

Retirement Encashment

If you have been a non-resident for 3 or more years, you will be able to encash your South African retirement fund interest in full - without any portion being annuitized.

Also, if you have already encashed your retirement interests after becoming a non-resident, we may be able to recover the tax from SARS. Reach out to ask us how we can help you.
